Reducing Large Pores
Our pores are essential to our skin’s health, providing the oils that keep our skin soft and supple. But who among us hasn’t gazed into a mirror (especially a magnifying mirror) and gasped at the sight of our pores. Patients tell me all the time that their pores are “giant,” or “enlarged,” and they are desperate to do something about it. Let’s step away from the mirror for a moment and learn some basic anatomy.
Each pore contains a sebaceous gland, which produces your skin’s oils. (Pores are more noticeable on parts of the face, like the forehead and the nose, where the sebaceous glands are bigger.) Fair-skinned people have pores on the small side; those with olive or darker skin have larger pores.
Here are some helpful tips to keep your pores as undetectable as possible:
Stay Out Of The Sun... Here’s one more reason to avoid sun damage. UV rays weaken the collagen that supports the pores. The result -- a loosening of the skin and more apparent pores.
A Clean Face... Dead skin cells and trapped sebum—which, put together, form a pimple—can stretch out pores. If you’re on the oily side, use an AHA cleanser once a day to keep the oil in check and reduce the chance of a breakout.
Use A Retinol... If you want to take it to the next level, try a retinol-based product on a daily basis.
Cover It Up... While you’re working on your skin care routine, take cover with a silicone based primer to improve your appearance.
